Plastic bags are among the most detrimental single-use plastic on our planet. On average, a person can use a plastic bag up to 12 minutes and after that most people will dump the plastic bag.
A few facts about plastic bags pollution in the US:
Environmental Protection Agency estimates that over 380 billion plastic bags, sacks, and wraps are consumed in the U.S. every year.
On average we only recycle one plastic bag in every 200 we use. Because of these statistics, we decided to create more awareness on plastic recycling to change these numbers.
Plastic Bag Recycling Preparation
Empty the plastic bag completely, and place all content separately depending on the nature of the material. This could include receipts, stickers, labels, and crumbs. These can easily contaminate your bag load.
Keep a bag collection bin in your house, such as one big garbage bag for all bags. Since they compact easily, you should be able to fit 50 to 100 plastic bags in one garbage bag.
Any bags you recycle should have a #2 or #4 plastic symbol on them. If not, you can’t know what plastic resin the bag is made from, so you’ll want to reuse it instead, before throwing it away.
